BBI stops goldfish and tilapia production

TANJUNG, S Kalimantan: Technical Implementation Unit (UPT) of Kambitin Fish Seed Center (BBI), Tabalong, South Kalimantan, was forced to stop production of goldfish and tilapia following protests from local farmers, AntaranewsKalsel reported.

Head of UPT BBI Kambitin Elzam Fikri in Tanjung on Wednesday said local seed farmers producing much of goldfish and tilapia so BBI does not produce the two types of seeds.

“Since 2010 we have stopped the production of goldfish and tilapia seeds because of objections from local farmers,” said Elzam.

Local seeds producers are worried that the seeds they produce will not sell well if UPT BBI Kambitin still produces goldfish and tilapia seeds.

Currently, UPT BBI Kambitin only produces seeds of catfish, baung, gourami, betok (climbing perch), catfish and biawan with a total production of 150,552,000 seeds.

The most seed types produced in BBI are 334,800 patin and betok 236,250 seeds.
