KAPIT: The 49-door Rumah Richard Engking at Km5 Jalan Selirik was hit by a flash flood early yesterday due to extremely heavy rain on Thursday night.

Flood waters around the longhouse’s compound, including the car park and multipurpose hall, reached around one metre high.

By dawn the flood waters had subsided, leaving behind a mess of deadwood, rubbish, and other debris.

When checking on the longhouse, Pelagus assemblyman Wilson Nyabong Ijang pointed out that this was the first time it had been hit by flash flooding.

“I called the Fire and Rescue Department to carry out flushing to help the villagers clean up. I also advised Tuai Rumah Richard Engking and his JKKK (village security and development committee) to lodge a report with Kapit District Disaster Management Committee about this flash flood.

“As the elected representative, I want them, the villagers, to receive the same amount of assistance as was given to others affected by floods,” said Nyabong.

Nyabong and Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat also presented grants of RM500 each to help the villagers with the clean-up.
