Couple pleads guilty to soliciting bribe, impersonating public servant

KOTA KINABALU: A married couple pleaded guilty in the Sessions Court here today to soliciting a bribe and impersonating a public servant.

Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) assistant health officer David @ Divi Jasni, 37, admitted to have solicited a bribe of RM200 from Lui Oi Yee at a restaurant in Jalan Pantai Cafe here at about 11.20 am on July 29 last year as an inducement not take action against Lui’s premises.

Judge Abu Bakar Manat set May 25 for sentencing after David, a father of six, requested time to raise money to pay the minimum fine for the offence under Section 17 (a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act, which provides for a maximum jail term of 20 years and a fine of up to five times the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher, upon conviction.

The judge set bail at RM10,000 in one surety.

Meanwhile, David’s wife Liah Moen, 35, was fined RM300 in default 10 day’s jail by the same court after she pleaded guilty to wearing a clothing item that was part of a DBKK health officer’s outfit at the same place, time and date.

The charge, under Section 171 of the Penal Code, carries an imprisonment of up to three months or a fine up to RM400 or both.
