MIRI : An oil and gas support vessel caught fire in the sea off Kuala Baram at around 3am today.

An explosion from the power pack engine room in the vessel was said to be the cause of the fire.

A source from Miri Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) when contacted today confirmed the incident.

Other vessels in the vicinity lent effort to put out the blaze.

It is learnt that 38 crew members have been brought to safety while another crew is reported missing.

All of the crew members were said to have jumped into the sea to escape before being saved by other vessels in the vicinity.

Two injured crew members, who sustained at least 20 per cent burns, have been  brought to Miri Hospital at 7.40am today while effort to locate the missing crew is underway.

Meanwhile, Petronas, via a press statement, has confirmed the fire on board vessel Geo Technical at offshore Sarawak.

“We have activated our Emergency Response Team and are working closely with the relevant authorities to contain the incident and bring the situation under control.

“Our utmost priority and concern is the safety of the people and environment at the moment,” the statement added.
