KUCHING: Bintulu Port Holdings Bhd (BPHB) conducted its ‘You’re Not Alone’ programme, providing stationery sets to 30 needy students of Politeknik Kuching here, yesterday.
This marked the very first time BPHB fulfilled its corporate social responsibility (CSR) outside Bintulu.
Group corporate services senior manager Maslihah Tioh said BPHB had been reaching out to the needy students and individuals in Bintulu for years.
“This is the first time we have our CSR programme outside of Bintulu. It’s Kuching this time and we look forward to having it in perhaps Miri in the future,” she said after handing over the assistance to the students at Politeknik Kuching campus, about 30km from here.
Maslihah said BPHB had set aside some RM200,000 to carry out its various CSR programmes every year.
She said the figure is not the ceiling because ‘we can top up the budget if there are more individuals needing our assistance’.
Early this year, she said they also lent a helping hand to the flood victims in Tatau. For this year, Maslihah said they targeted to help at least five secondary and primary schools as part of their CSR initiatives.
“Last year alone, we helped six schools in Bintulu, three of which are rural schools. We also organised a week-long workshop to help students prepare for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations.”
She added that BPHB spent over RM30,000 on that workshop alone.
Maslihah said schools or learning institutions in need of assistance could submit their requests to them via its official website www.bintuluport.com.my.
Director of Politeknik Kuching Lt Col Kamaludin Daud said he could not be more pleased with the BPHB assistance.
He said many of their over 4,800 students need a certain level of financial support.
He said their hostel was only capable of accommodating 2,300 students.
“So we need more CSR programmes like this to help our students. We hope that this ‘You’re Not Alone’ programme can motivate the students to strive for academic excellence,” he added.
