Woman pleads guilty to running illegal lottery

MIRI: A woman pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to possession of illegal lottery tickets and running illegal lottery activities.

May 23 to hear the Welfare Department’s social report on Jessica Martin, 19, from Bandar Baru Permyjaya.

She was granted RM2,000 bail with two local sureties.

Jessica was charged under Section 4A(a) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The Section provides for a fine of between RM20,000 and RM200,000, and up to five years in jail.

She also faced a charge under Section 9(1) of the same Act for being in possession of an illegal lottery ticket.

The Section provides for a maximum fine of RM5,000 or up to six months in jail, or both.

Based on the facts of the case, on Feb 10 around 2.30pm, a team from the Kuching police headquarters Criminal Investigation Division led by Insp Khairul Nidzam Abdul Ghani inspected a counter in front of a spectacle shop on suspicion of illegal lottery sales.

During the inspection, the police detained a woman, who was sitting at the counter, and seized several items including a mobile phone, printer, bag, paper printed with numbers believed to be for illegal lottery, and RM1,254 in cash.

Investigation revealed that the paper found was a betting slip and the accused was brought to the Miri Central police station for further action.
