BINTULU: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) has reminded taxi drivers and other drivers for hire to register with and contribute to its Self-Employed Employment Injury Scheme.

Socso Bintulu manager Jimmy Hendrick Kijon said the compulsory scheme, which took effect on June 1, 2017, provides protection to self-employed insured persons from employment injuries including occupational diseases and accidents during work-related activities.

“We have done two engagement programmes — a briefing session with taxi drivers at a hotel, and setting up our booth at the Bintulu Airport to promote this scheme.

“However, we have only registered three taxi drivers under the scheme this year and I was told that there are a few hundred of them in Bintulu,” he told reporters yesterday.

He stressed that the scheme is compulsory under the provisions of the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017.

“The duration of protection is 12 months from the date and time the contribution is paid
and validated by the payment receipt,” he said.

Jimmy explained that services included under the scheme are budget taxi, executive taxi, limousine, airport taxi, rental car, and GrabCar.

The payment for one year’s coverage can be made online at www.iperkeso.my or by cash at Socso offices nationwide.

The scheme covers medical benefit, temporary disablement benefit, permanent disablement benefit, constant attendance allowance, dependants’ benefit, funeral benefit, education benefit, and facilities for physical and vocational rehabilitation.
