MIRI: State CID chief Datuk Dev Kumar has confirmed that two of the three suspects arrested for allegedly blackmailing and confining a cook on April 15, are police personnel.

According to him, the two are a 39-year-old Lance Corporal and 34-year-old supporting constable, while another suspect is a 37-year-old civil servant who works at the Miri District police headquarters (IPD).

“The three suspects were arrested on April 17 between 12.30pm and 4pm at Miri IPD.Further investigations found that the three suspects were also positive for syabu,” he said in a media statement yesterday.

Dev said the three suspects are being investigated under Section 385/342 of the Penal Code.

In the incident at around 5am on April 15, the victim had gone to the back of Miri Stadium to meet his friend, but when he arrived, the victim was arrested by three men who introduced themselves as policemen.

“The victim was ordered to go into his car with the suspects and one of them had shown a plastic containing white substance believed to be syabu. The suspects then accused the victim was involved in drug trafficking and asked for a sum of RM10, 000,” he said.

Dev said that the victim was then taken to a bank here to withdraw cash via an automated teller machine (ATM), but the victim said he did not have enough money.

“Following that, the victim was then locked up in a hotel room in Miri for an hour. After an hour, the victim told the suspect that his mother could provide the money and asked to be brought back to his home,” he said.

Upon arrival at the victim’s home in Pujut, he contacted the police for help. Dev added that the three suspects fled after knowing that the victim had contacted the police about the incident.
