KUCHING: United People’s Party (UPP) will support whoever the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate is contesting in the Lanang parliamentary constituency.
Its deputy president Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said it does not matter which candidate the BN leadership picked, UPP is going to give its undivided support in this general election (GE14).
Speaking to journalists after flagging off the UPP Charity Run 2018 at the Crown Towers here today, he said UPP is all for the idea of fielding the ‘best winnable’ candidate.
He mentioned the memorandum of understanding signed between UPP and Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) last month, saying that this served as a platform for both parties to work together.
“And the memorandum will allow the Barisan Nasional leadership to decide who is the best candidate,” added Dr Jerip, who is Assistant Minister of Transportation.
He said both UPP and SUPP had prepared their respective winnable candidates, but the final call would lie in the BN leadership.
“Whoever is picked out, we should work together. That should be the spirit of the memorandum,” he quipped.
He made these remarks when prompted for response on a news report which SUPP said it was confident that its member Kelvin Kong would be the BN candidate for Lanang this election.
