KUCHING: Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian has resigned as a Senator in Dewan Negara to contest in Stampin parliamentary seat this upcoming 14th General Election (GE14).

The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) president revealed this after Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg unveiled the Barisan Nasional (BN) Sarawak line-up for GE14 at Parti Persaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) headquarters here today.

On the vacant senate seat, Dr Sim said there are now opportunity for young leaders, notably the capable ones who can fight for Sarawakians and Sarawak in parliament.

“I need everyone that I can have to fight in parliament,” he called for greater support from all levels of the society.

“Similarly as (party) president, I am only allowed three terms so this is the begining of my fifth year,” he said while emphasising the need to train and expose young leaders to succeed his responsibility.

Dr Sim added that the party wants to groom the potential young people who may still lack in certain aspects.

“But we want to focus in winning this election first and as far as SUPP is concerned, we will actively train the young people to prepare them. If they are not ready, they will be in trouble,” he said.

Dr Sim is expected to face Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen in Stampin parliamentary seat this GE14.

Chong, the incumbent of Bandar Kuching, has last night announced the decision to contest in Stampin while his special assistant Dr Kelvin Yii will run for the Bandar Kuching seat against SUPP Women chief Kho Teck Wan.
