SIBU: Many voters in the Nangka state constituency, particularly the Chinese, failed to vote during the 2013 parliamentary election, claimed incumbent Sibu MP Oscar Ling.

He said many voters did not know that the Sibu parliamentary area was made up of the Nangka, Pelawan, and Bawang Assan state constituencies.

“I therefore appeal to voters in these three state constituencies to turn up to vote this 14th general election. Many voters, especially the Chinese in Nangka state constituency, didn’t turn up to vote during the last general election,” he said at the launch of the Harapan P212 operations centre yesterday.

According to Ling, 52 per cent of the 74,000 voters in Sibu are Chinese, followed by 25 per cent Dayaks, 11 per cent Malays, and 12 per cent of those from other communities.

He claimed that most Chinese voters are for the opposition, but many of them work outside Sibu.

“I hope they would all come back to vote, to exercise their rights as citizens,” he added.

Incumbent Lanang MP Alice Lau, Pelawan assemblyman David Wong, and Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang were also present at the event.
