KUCHING: The location of Larry Sng’s operation room just below the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (now known as Progressive Democratic Party) N.48 Meluan office in Julau has raised the eyebrows of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing.

Sng who is a former Pelagus assemblyman, state assistant minister and advisor in the Chief Minister’s Office has confirmed that he will be contesting in the Julau parliamentary constituency against the incumbent PRS secretary-general Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum.

Meluan is one of the two state constituencies within Julau parliamentary constituency. The other is Pakan.

“What caught my interest is Larry’s office is next to PDP office. I just hope it is just physical proximity and not the proximity of minds between Larry Sng and PDP,” Masing told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Masing once coined the term “Merger of The Mind” during a confrontation between PRS and PDP against BN-friendly Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras) several months before the 2016 state election.

Masing said it would be an uphill battle for Sng to topple Salang who is standing on a BN-PRS ticket.

“Why he wants to contest in Julau is best known to him and his father,” said Masing referring to Larry’s father Datuk Sng Chee Hua – a former Julau MP before Salang took over it.

Sng stood on Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) ticket in Lubok Antu in the 2013 parliamentary election. He was defeated by the then BN-PRS candidate Datuk William Nyallau Badak by a majority of 4,091 votes in a three-cornered contest. The other contestant was Nicholas Bawin Anggat of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

In the last parliamentary election, Salang won the Julau seat by securing 9,891 votes against Sarawak Workers Party’s Wong Judat (3.936) and PKR’s Andy Wong Hong Yu (2,852).
