Soldiers foil attempt to smuggle red onions into Indonesia

SERIAN: The arrest of seven foreigners at Ladang Tetangga Akrab near here on Sunday also uncovered an attempt to smuggle red onions across the Sarawak-Kalimantan border.

Patrollers from the 13th Battalion Royal Malay Regiment (13 RAMD) apprehended the seven Indonesians – all in their 30s – at 10.30am during an inspection.

They army personnel also found 27 sacks of red onions, weighing 432kg, being carried on board six motorcycles. It is believed that the seven were trying to smuggle the onions across the border.

According to a 13 RAMD spokesperson, these Indonesians also did not have the relevant papers like identification and travel documents, on them.

“They were acting suspiciously while crossing the border on their bike. Upon inspection, we found that they were carrying with them 27 sacks of red onions. None of them had valid travel documents on them.”

The onions and motorcycles, all estimated to be worth RM3,801, were later brought to Serian District police headquarters.
