State exponents bag four gold on first day

KUCHING: The Sarawak contingent put up a commendable performance on the first day of the 8th Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia (KPM) Wushu Championship at the Sarawak Indoor Stadium yesterday by winning four gold, two silver and nine bronze medals.

They are third overall in the medal standings while defending champions Melaka surged to top of the table with 13 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals, closely followed by Penang in second place with 10 golds, one silver and nine bronzes.

Bukit Jalil-based Sukma athlete Lee Hui Xuan struck the gold in the Girls Group A nanquan where she scored 9.36 points to finish ahead of Ong Jia Yee of Melaka (8.79), Jasmine Tay Jing Xuan of Negeri Sembilan (7.50) and Boo Yee Zhi of Selangor (7.10).

Hui Xuan picked up a silver in the Girls Group A nandao after she was out-pointed 9.39-9.36 points by the challenger from Melaka Ong Jia Yee.

Elvin Mackarther also delivered a gold for Sarawak in Boys Group D elementary changquan where he scored 8.24 points to beat Negeri Sembilan’s Chen Jia Le by 0.04 points while Selangor’s Chong Wei Jie (8.12) and Melaka’s Wong Kah Zheng (8.07) took the bronze medals respectively.

Sarawak’s Kee Jia Ke was first in the Boys Group A taijiquan with 8.92 points while his teammate Bong Yun Pin came in fourth with 8.75 points to collect a bronze.

Edison Wong Sing Yen bagged the gold in the Boys Group B Taijiquan Style 42 when he topped the five-contestant field with 8.90 points.

In the same category, Mok Xiao Yuan won the gold with 8.65 points, losing to the silver medallist from Melaka Eddie Chin Jia Ze by 0.17 points.

Another Sukma athlete Stephanie Ngu Chai Ern picked up two bronzes in the Girls Group B changquan and Girls Group B jianshu. Sarawak second silver was contributed by Lee Ming Rui in Boys Group D elementary changquan.

The other bronze medallists include Elizabeth Beckxia (Girls Group D elementary changquan), Ann Sim Jia Eng (Girls Group B taijiquan Style 42), Fu Sian Wei (Boys Group B jianshu), Ashley Chai Ern Nie (Girls Group B nandao) and Sukma athlete Lee Cau Peng (Boys Group A daoshu).

Today’s final day of the competition will see sanda events ranging from 48kg to 70kg for both boys and girls and the public are welcome to watch the exciting bouts where Sarawak will be parading seven athletes.
