SIMUNJAN: Development is not the sole work of an elected representative, but is also the collective responsibility of the people – specifically the constituents.

In this sense, Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Batang Sadong parliamentary constituency Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri assures all that the BN grassroots leaders, particularly those from Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), subscribe to this principle.

“The grassroots leaders, therefore, must be bold enough to defend the BN candidates in this parliamentary election because our (BN candidates) strive to meet the needs and aspirations of the people.

“They must not fear the opposition members, who can only criticise the development agenda of the BN-led government,” she said during a walkabout programme for Punggor zone here yesterday, organised by PBB.

Reiterating the collective responsibility principle, Nancy viewed development as being ‘everyone’s struggle’.

“It should not be me alone working. If it weren’t for you (the grassroots leaders) submitting letters of requests and applications for projects to me, the roads – like the one that you are using today – would not be built.

“Having said this, it is my job to bring your requests and applications up to the higher authorities – the relevant ministries. You can see with your own eyes the fruits of your labour.

“Therefore, you should not fear the opposition because we all have done our job,” she said, pointing out the road leading to Kampung Lubok Samsu here as proof of their good work, apart from the 24-hour electricity and water supply that they are enjoying now.

Moreover, Nancy also assured the people that once certain technicalities affecting the Bengoh Dam project in Kuching had been solved, they would no longer face any water supply problem.
