KUCHING: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Paralympic Council of Malaysia (PCM) with the state government to jointly organise the World Para Swimming Championship has made Kuching the first Asian city ever to host the event.
The MoU was signed during a ceremony held at a local hotel today.
According to a press statement, Malaysia won the bid to host the event recently and the host will welcome 700 swimmers from 75 countries to compete in the competition.
The championship is scheduled to be held here at the Pandela Rinong Aquatic Centre from Jul 29 to Aug 4 next year.
The MoU was signed by PCM president SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin and Youth and Sports permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee.
PCM deputy president Ng Keng Chuan, Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sarawak Sports Corporation CEO Dr Ong Kong Swee witnessed the signing.
Also present during the ceremony were Minister of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah and Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth, Sports Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah and Assistant Minister of Youth and Sports Datuk Snowdan Lawan.
