PUTRAJAYA: Former Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail is said to be preparing to charge former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in connection with the troubled 1Malaysia Development Bhd  (1MBD) before he was replaced in 2015.

Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad said  Abdul Gani made the claims when they met at Perdana Leadership Foundation here yesterday as he wanted to find out why the latter was removed as AG in 2015.

“He (Abdul Gani) claims he was preparing to charge Najib but you know what happened, that morning, he was deprived from his post,” he told a press conference at the Perdana Leadership Foundation here today.

It was reported that Abdul Gani was removed due to health reasons, and was replaced  by former Federal Court judge Tan Sri Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Asked if Abdul Gani showed any documents, Dr Mahathir said he did not ask for any documents to be presented and the talks were merely verbal.

Abdul Gani was heading the special task force investigating the RM2.6 billion in the former prime minister’s bank account and the SRC International case.

Asked on Tan Sri Dr Mohd Irwan Serigar Abdullah whose service contract as Treasury Secretary-General had been shortened to June 14 this year due to any wrongdoings after the secretaries-general of ministries meeting on Monday, Dr Mahathir said the government was currently investigating and certain steps needed to be taken to facilitate investigation.

The Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Dr Ali Hamsa said that Dr Mohd Irwan will be placed under the Public Service Department from May 14 to June 13 and not permitted to carry out his duties as Treasury Secretary-General or anything related to the Finance Ministry.

On another question if the Election Commission chief Tan Sri Mohd Hashim Abdullah will be changed, Dr Mahathir said: “If he has done anything wrong, the normal process will apply to punish people who had done the wrong things.”

To another question that Dr Mahathir has said that EC was purposely delaying the 14th General Election results, he replied: ” Even though I had said it, I can’t grab hold and throw him to jail. That is not proper.” – Bernama
