KUALA LUMPUR: The normally calm situation outside Gate 2 of the Istana Negara suddenly turned lively when a convoy of 130 executive and budget taxis flocked to the area, honking their horns in support of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s release yesterday.

The situation has not only attracted the attention of members of the press who have been here since early morning, but also the workers at nearby offices as most of them were spotted peeking through the windows to witness the ‘celebration’ of Anwar’s release. Some even rushed out to the street to record the whole event using their smartphones.

Suara Harapan Pemandu Teksi Se-Malaysia chairman Zaidi Maaini told reporters that taxi drivers fully supported the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government and truly welcomed the decision to release Anwar from prison.

He said it was also hoped that the PH government would do something to change the fate and protect the wellbeing of taxi drivers who had been oppressed under the previous government, especially with the introduction of the e-hailing service.

“We also hope that the e-hailing service will be reviewed by the PH government,” he added.

Also present were Wangsa Maju Member of Parliament Datin Paduka Tan Yee Kew, and 60 PKR supporters from Wangsa Maju and Bandar Tun Razak. — Bernama
