KUCHING: Nineteen people were affected after a fire razed four single-storey terrace houses at Taman Hui Sing, here yesterday.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) state assistant operations director Tiong Ling Hii said no injuries were reported during the incident, in which two homes suffered about 80 per cent damage.

“A distress call was received at 12.55pm, prompting the deployment of personnel from the Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya fire stations.

“The situation was brought under control at 1.23pm and we managed to stop the flames from further spreading to other adjacent houses,” he said.

Tiong added the operation ended at 2.40pm, with the remaining two homes sustaining minor to moderate damage.

A woman in her 30s, who had been renting at one of the affected houses, said the fire broke out shortly after she left to fetch her children from school.

“I had only left the house for about 15 minutes when I received a call about the fire. I rushed back but found the house engulfed in flames, along with all my belongings,” she said.

The cause of the fire, along with total loss, is still being ascertained.
