SIBU: Nurses ought to keep themselves up to date on new knowledge and skills in order to adapt to the changing world, Sibu Municipal Council chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King advised.

Speaking at the Nurses Night on Tuesday at Kingwood Hotel here, he said by acquiring new knowledge and skills they would remain relevant in their profession in this ever-changing society.

“The responsibility of a nurse is big as you are entrusted to care, to treat and to help the patients to have a better quality life.

“Experiences and vast knowledge are important to the patients and their families so that they have greater confidence in you,” he emphasised.

Being a nurse is an endless loving act of heart, he reminded.

“They are required to carry out their duties with dedication and commitment,” he said.

“Nurses carry hope and happiness to their patients. They are committed to take care of their patients’ health, always with the most attention and a great smile, carrying comfort and hope to so many patients,” he added.

He reminded that despite the advancement in technologies, human soul and human heart cannot be replaced by a robot and caring is the essence of nursing.

Describing nurses as persons strong enough to tolerate everything and soft enough to understand everyone, Tiong said: “We know that drugs that the patients receive for treatments are essential. However, a very important part of the process is the great affection, care, hospitality and joy radiated from nurses.”

He also urged the nurses to take pride in their profession.

Present at the event were Sibu Hospital director Dr Ngian Hie Ung, Nursing Training Institute Sibu director Lee Na and the Nurses Night organising chairperson Fatimah Duat.
