Singaporean anglers land top prizes in fishing competition

MIRI: Singaporean anglers Lee Kim Hwee and Lau Kim Chye took home the top two prizes in the individual category of the 11th Miri City International Deep Sea Fishing Tournament 2018, which ended on Sunday.

Lee landed an escolar weighing a whopping 55.62kg and bagged home the grand prize of RM20,000 while Lau who also landed an escolar weighing 51.38kg, won RM6,000, Shimano fishing tackles and certificates.

The respective third, fourth and fifth winners were Wong King Uieng from Malaysia with the catch of a grouper weighing 48.16kg and took home RM3,000, Phang Soon Kiong from Brunei also landed a grouper weighing 43.10kg (RM1,5000) while Lin Jing from China landed a 42.94kg grouper (RM1,000), apart from Shimano fishing tackles and certificates.

The sixth to 15th winners in the same category received RM800, fishing tackles and certificates. They included four Malaysians – Ahmad Abu Sapuan, Hii Ding Sin, Hii Hieng Kong

and Wong Ling Kui; three from China – Liu Yong, Pang Ying Hua and Li Zhi Sheng and  two Singaporeans – Choo Kim San and Lee Keng Ho.

In the team category, the first place went to Liew Sam Ching from Malaysia and anglers from China – Yang Rui Jin and Kong De Qiang – after they landed a grouper, amberjack and ruby snapper with a total weight of 41.78kg. They received RM5,000.

The second place went to three Malaysians – Hii Sii Sing, Then Ho Soon and Ting Kee Choi – after they landed an amberjack, grouper and ruby snapper weighing 38.06kg. They received RM3,000.

Winning the third place were Dawn Lim Sui Ming, Toh Chee Siong and Chua Soon Chye of Sigapore, who landed a bream, barracudas and grouper weighing  33.08kg. They took home RM2,000.

The winning teams also received certificates of recognition and a set of fishing tackles each.

In the fish species category, the winners having the biggest fish in each of the six species took home RM700, fishing tackles and certificate of appreciation.

The winners for grouper species was Chan Kian Wang, followed by Lau Ngee Lin for amberjack, Lim Lai Ing (ruby snapper), Ngu Gie Hoe (tuna), Francis Keith Desmond (giant trevally) and Arif Mohammad Yusof (mangrove jack).

The winners received their prizes from Assistant Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Mayor Adam Yii, state Fisheries Department deputy director Jack Clive Jusak, representatives of the co-organisers and sponsors, and Miri Anglers Club resident Ting Thung Hing and the

tournament organising chairman Aaron Abel Donald were also present at the prize presentation ceremony.

Thirty-five anglers from Singapore, 28 from China, 15 from Brunei and 56 from Malaysia took part in the four-day, three-night tournament held as part of the Visit Miri Year 2018.

The tournament was organised by the club in collaboration with Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Fisheries Department, Miri City Council. Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
