KUCHING: Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) is going green at its Ramadan bazaars this year by banning the use of polystyrene containers in view of its hazardous impact to the environment.

Traders at the council’s Satok, Semarak and Sukma Ria Ramadan bazaars have been reminded to comply with the rules set by DBKU as well as the Health Department.

It also called on the public to bring their own food containers for takeaways when purchasing food items.

The council also advised traders to be aware of where the ingredients for their dishes were sourced from and to ensure that the food prepared are clean and safe for consumption.

DBKU launched three Ramadan bazaars simultaneously yesterday, it being the first day of fasting, with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg declaring open the one at Satok.

DBKU Datuk Bandar Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai was also present.

Ramadan bazaar is one of the highlights of Ramadan as Muslims and non-Muslims alike flock to the bazaar in search of affordable and delicious street food.

The council hoped that through these bazaars, it would provide opportunities for small-time traders, particularly Bumiputeras, to earn extra income and boost the tourism sector through visits from domestic and international tourists.
