Saba to enlarge talent pool through school clubs

KUCHING: The Sarawak Amateur Boxing Association (Saba) would like to see more boxing clubs set up in schools throughout the state.

This, according to Saba president Dato Rahman Lariwoo, would help to produce a larger pool of talents for the association to select from for the state team.

“This is a vital move in the efforts to promote and popularise boxing at grass roots level.

“Currently, we have three clubs in three schools but that is not enough for us to produce more calibre boxers,” added Rahman.

He said the setting up of school boxing clubs is to attract the interest of the pupils in the sport as well as giving them early exposure.

“With these clubs, we can unearth more talents to be roped into the state team if they show potential.”

Rahman said Saba will be working closely with the Sarawak Education Department to establish more clubs in the schools.

In another development, Rahman said Saba had finalised nine boxers for the state team to carry Sarawak’s challenge in Sukma XIX in Perak from Sept 12-22.

They are Shafiq Hazziman Abdullah Jefri (46kg-49kg), Wilson Berayin Sumbang (49.1kg-52kg), Daeloniel Mcdelon Bong (52.1kg-56kg), Muhammad Sufri Suardi (56.1kg-60kg), Deanen Ului (60.1kg-64kg), Chrisyuden Ripoh (64.1kg-69kg), Mohammad Nawab Abdul Kader (69.1kg-75kg), Qairul Naim Jasman (75.1kg-81kg) and Mohd Zainuddin Zailani (81.1kg-91kg).

Whereas the reserve boxer is Muhammad Safiuddin Mohammad Ali (49.1kg-52kg).
