KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today denied having asked to be put under witness protection programme as reported by the local media today.

“Instead, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak has lodged a police report asking for protection for himself and his family as they fear for their safety after the 14th General Election,” the former premier’s spokesman said in a statement here today.

The two-paragraph statement was issued in response to the media reports that Najib had lodged a report at the Sentul Police headquarters at 5 pm yesterday, claiming that there was a clear threat to his life and his family members.

The reports, mostly quoting Malay Mail’s exclusive report, stated that the former prime minister had asked to be put under witness protection programme in the ongoing probe into the 1Malaysia Development Berhad-related scandal. – Bernama
