SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) is looking into modernising the riverine transportation system in tandem with the state’s emphasis on digital economy.

Assistant Minister of Transportation Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the proposed system, which will employ Internet technology to allow for electronic ticketing as well as check-in, is much like what is enjoyed by air travellers.

“So, we (SRB) are thinking about it now – to modernise our riverine transportation system, which includes e-ticketing and terminals (for e-check-in).

“But for that to happen, every boat has to modernise themselves – all this are within our plan.

“Our express (boat) terminal is no different from the airport, so to say. These are things that we have in mind, but it will take some time for us to think through as it includes the Internet of Things (IoT), so to say. This also falls in with the plan of our Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg).  But we need to modernise our transportation facilities,” he told reporters here yesterday when asked if SRB had plans to introduce a computerised ticketing system to avoid congestion at terminals.

Dr Jerip was met after representing Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Datuk Amar Dr James Jemut Masing, who is also Infrastructure Development and Transportation Minister, to launch the state-wide River Safety Campaign in conjunction with Gawai Dayak, Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations and mid-term school holidays at Sibu Express Boat Terminal.

He added that boat passengers could even book tickets online in future.

“So, express boat operators too have to be (linked) online. These are the things that we want to encourage them. SRB and the operators will have to think along that line now.”

Dr Jerip also concurred that the computerised system is one way to prevent overloading.

He added that only licensed boats would be in the digital system.

He mentioned that all this is part and parcel of the safety measures to make everyone feel safe.

Among those present were SRB chairman Murni Suhaili and controller Richard Tajan.
