PUTRAJAYA: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) will stay as long as the state’s security level is not at its best, according to new Home Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
He said the curfew in the area would also continue.
“We will continue with the surveillance. I think it is still necessary, and as long as we feel it is not safe enough, then ESSCom will be maintained,” he said in his first press conference and first day as Home Minister today.
On the threat by Daesh and Abu Sayyaf, he said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun would brief him on the issue.
“Anything that threatens the country’s security, regardless of the sources, we will take seriously, particularly kidnapping, threats to life, and robbery,” he said.
On Rohingya refugees highlighted by the previous government, Muhyiddin said the issue would be discussed with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
“We are not members of UNHCR, but on the basis of humanitarian concern, we will see what we can do to alleviate the problem,” he said. – Bernama
