Lokman, Zulaikah to defend crowns

KUCHING: Mohd Lokman Mustaffa and Zulaikah Nurziana Nasser will be back to defend their Men’s Open and Women’s Open titles in the 5th Sarawak Grand Golf Championship at Damai Golf and Country Club (DGCC) in Santubong from July 20 to 22.

The duo will be among local golfers vying for the late Pehin Sri Datuk Patinggi Adenan Satem and Puan Sri Dato Hajah Jamilah Anu challenge trophies.

“Entries for the prestigious event are now open and we are encouraging those who are interested to register early to avoid any disappointment,” DGCC general manager Roslan Mohd Salleh said on the coming event to be held at DGCC for the second consecutive year.

The closing date for entries is on July 13 and the tournament will be decided by stroke play over three rounds of 18 holes on each day and is subjected to the organising committee’s decision in the event of circumstance which makes the playing of 54 holes impracticable, to cancel any round(s) at its discretion.

The top 36 golfers with lowest gross scores over the first 36 holes will qualify for the final round to be held on July 22.

This tournament is open to amateur golfers with a maximum current NHS/USGA handicap index of 13.2 (course handicap 14) and below for the men’s category and 34.9 (course handicap 36) and below for the ladies’ category.

Meanwhile, response for the May edition of DGCC’s Monthly Escalation Medal tournament had been encouraging with 60 members taking part.

Nazrul Iman Nasaruddin finished first in the gross category after he carded a six-over par 78 while Awang Madzlan Abang Adenan came in second with 85 strokes and finishing in third place was Reta Bujang. Finishing in fourth place was Khalid Hamid with 87 on countback while Awang Sani Seruji came in fifth.

Abang Madzlan carded an impressive seven-under par 65 to finish first in the nett category while Mohd Jais Daud came in second with four-under par 68. Finishing third was Zulkarnain Rosli two strokes adrift.

In the invited guests category, Dato Kho Kak Beng emerged winner after he carded a two under par 70 while Dato Ngieng Ping Wei finished second one stroke behind.

Sarawak State Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) deputy general manager Edwin Abit finished third with 72 strokes while Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) president Hoan Kee Hock was fifth with 77 strokes.
