KOTA KINABALU: A proposal is underway to absorb Water Department contract and part-time workers as permanent staff.

Infrastructure Development Minister Datuk Peter Anthony said he had proposed for skilled workers to be absorbed as permanent employees of the department.

He added that the present method was merely to get contract and part-time workers, which he described as inconvenient for both the department and the workers concerned.

“It is inconvenient because it doesn’t encourage commitment. At the same time, workers also have family commitments they have to fulfil,” he said.

He added that without permanent staff, the running of the department and his ministry would suffer.

“Hence, I encourage recruiting staff to ease the administration,” he said.

Peter also spoke of the controversial Kaiduan Dam and said there was insufficient water supply here, Putatan, Inanam, Sepanggar, Tuaran and other places.

“The water supply capacity is still not enough,” he said.

However, since the dam received a lot of objections from the affected residents, he said they needed a Plan B to resolve the water shortage issue.
