KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) welcomes the new education policies proposed and introduced by the newly-minted Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.

Based on the policies introduced after Maszlee’s first day in office recently, KGBS president Ahmad Malie observed that efforts were made to strengthen and enhance the Education Ministry, especially on the welfare and services of educators in the country.

“Among the matters he mentioned that we welcomed include reducing teachers’ burden, smaller class size or reducing number of students in the class, besides appointing new teacher assistants and many others,” he said in a text message yesterday.

To enable the education sector to better understand the new policies in detail, Ahmad thus urged the Education Ministry to make arrangement for a meeting and discussion between Maszlee and teachers associations or unions in the soonest time possible.

“That way, the teachers’ unions and associations can get the latest information and extend cooperation to the minister to ensure smooth implementation of the policies he had proposed,” he added.

In congratulating Maszlee for his new appointment, he sincerely hopes that the minister can make arrangement for a meeting with KGBS.  Maszlee was among the 13 cabinet ministers of Pakatan Harapan federal government who were sworn in before the Yang di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara on Monday.

Maszlee, who is also the Simpang Renggam member of parliament, is a former International Islamic University Malaysia lecturer. He joined Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia in March.

Having expressed his determination to improve the current education system, he said the system needed to be injected with new methods and should not be too focused on rankings and examinations.
