Curious onlookers from the plantation take a closer at the crashed SUV.

MARUDI: A Marudi Hospital sports utility vehicle (SUV) was involved in a single vehicle crash along Miri-Marudi road on Tuesday.

Marudi police chief DSP Gabriel Risut said in the incident around 3pm, the SUV was transporting a pregnant patient from Marudi Hospital to Miri Hospital.

Besides the driver, aged 43, the 34-year-old patient was also accompanied by a doctor and nurse, aged 28 and 32 respectively.

It is understood the driver somehow lost control of the SUV when travelling down a steep hill at KM16 in slippery conditions.

The vehicle then flipped and landed on its side in an oil palm plantation by the roadside.

All four are reported to have only suffered light injuries requiring outpatient treatment, while the foetus was also unharmed.

Gabriel said after receiving a report, a team led by investigating officer Insp G Visvathan and Sgt Abang Ridzuan from the Marudi police station went to the scene.

The case is being investigated under Section 43 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.

The section provides for a fine of between RM4,000 and RM10,000 and up to 12 months in prison.
