MIRI: The generosity of the congregation, family and friends, the public and  government enabled a new church to be built at Piasau Garden here.

Pastor Lim Thien Leong in his address at the opening of the new Piasau Baptist Church yesterday thanked them for the contribution of over RM3.2 million to complete the project.

“We thank  God for his blessing here in Malaysia particularly in Sarawak where churches and other religions support each other for peace, harmonious living and the development of the state and nation.

“What an amazing privilege it was to work together with members of the church, our community and the construction team to ‘Rebuild the Lord’s House’. The work was hard, investment heavy, with many sacrifice, but the result is rewarding,” he added.

While the main construction took around 18 months from May 2015 to November 2016, the vision to build a new sanctuary was birthed on June 21, 2008.

Meanwhile, Bishop Richard Ng, chairman of ACS, who represented the Catholic church in the dedication prayer for inter-church unity, prayed that the people would be able to practise religious freedom under the new Pakatan Harapan federal government.

Also present were Miri MP Dr Michael Teo, Senadin and Piasau assemblymen Datuk Lee Kim Shin and Datuk Sebastian Ting respectively,  former Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and pastors from Baptist churches and other churches in Miri.
