KUCHING: Police on duty at various stations across Kuching were caught by surprise yesterday afternoon when members of the public dropped in with a delivery of chocolate.

‘Jom Bagi Coklat Kat Abang dan Akak Polis #chocs4cops’, a voluntary and citizen-driven initiative was started in Kuala Lumpur by lawyer and activist Siti Kasim and former journalist Sidek Kamiso.

It was a response to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak complaining through his lawyer that police personnel helped themselves to food and chocolate from his fridge during last week’s raid of his residence.

thesundaypost yesterday tagged along to one such drop-off at the Central Police Station, together with architect Min Wee, his wife Samantha Yap, and son Sean Wee.

When asked why they were doing this, Wee said that it was in the spirit of things.

“It’s a good positive thing to do and everyone is doing it throughout Malaysia. We don’t want Sarawak to be left out. The nice thing was that a lot of friends were immediately excited about the idea and pitched in to buy, he added.

“People are very generous,” he said.

At the Central Police Station, officers at the desk were initially wary but the mood lightened up once Wee and Yap explained the purpose of the visit. The chocolates were then received by Corporal Nurul Bashirah Abdullah and Corporal Irwan Shah Abdullah.

To date, over 3,000 Facebook users registered interest in participating on the Facebook event page, with a handful planning to extend their chocolate giving to next Saturday to cover more police stations, as well as fire stations.

In Kuching, various citizens with chocolate also used the event page to lay claim to Sekama Police Station, Sg Maong Police Station, Simpang Tiga Police Station, Gita Police Station and 7th Mile Police Station.
