Kanowit girl clinches Sibu Kumang Gawai Dayak 2018 crown

SIBU: Valerie Michelle Alli from Sungai Ranan in Kanowit was crowned winner of Sibu Kumang Gawai Dayak 2018 – a title that earned at the 19-year-old RM1,500 and a host of accompanying prizes.

She was among the 10 finalists of the pageant, staged at the civic centre here as the highlight of the division-level pre-Gawai Dayak celebration on Saturday night.

Placing behind Valerie was Terrina Rosser Mujah, 20, from Mukah, who walked away with RM1,200. The respective second, third and fourth runners-up were Wati Assan, 20, of Sungai Lengan, Rebecca Jane Jemeb (18, Kampung Bahagia Jaya in Teku), and Christina Ringgit (26, Sungai Sengan).

They pocketed RM1,000, RM300 and RM250, respectively.

The other five finalists were Cinderella Simong (18, Tanjung Penasu), Mcqueen Menti Entry (23, Machan), Sharon Mathew (24, Kanowit), Florence Jega Jungan (20, Sungai Arip in Selangau), and Maliyana Maradi (19, Jalan Kemuyang).

Additionally, Christina was also chosen as the ‘Most Outstanding Fashion Model’ and ‘Most Favourite Kumang (Maiden); whereas the ‘Most Popular Kumang’ and ‘Best Speaker’ subsidiary titles went to Sharon.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and his wife Datin Amar Doreen Mayang were the distinguished guests-of-honour.

Ministry of Utilities permanent secretary Dato Alice Jawan, who is also Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) secretary-general, presented the prizes.
