KUCHING: Two separate fire outbreaks here early yesterday morning saw six vehicles, including four belonging to the state Agriculture Department, go up in flames.

The first incident happened around 4am at Jalan Stampin when two vehicles parked in the compound of a house caught fire.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) state assistant operations director Tiong Ling Hii said the fire had not only destroyed the vehicles – a sports utility vehicle and a multi-purpose vehicle – but also damaged the house.

“Personnel from the Batu Lintang and Tabuan Jaya fire stations arrived at the scene to see both vehicles engulfed in flames. Immediate action was taken to control and douse the fire. Both vehicles were destroyed while about 20 per cent of the house was damaged, although no injuries were reported,” he said in a statement.

The second incident, said Tiong, took place at a workshop in Tarat, along the Kuching-Serian Road.

He said Bomba personnel were deployed to the scene following a distress call at 5.12am and managed to douse the flames at 6.51am.

“The workshop housed four vehicles belonging to the Agriculture Department which, we were told, were placed there to be scrapped. All four vehicles as well as the workshop were destroyed in the incident,” he said, adding no report of injuries was received.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of both fires.
