KUCHING: Be part of the United Nations (UN)’ newest global challenge on social media to #BeatPlasticPollution, the theme chosen for this year’s World Environment Day on June 5 with the tagline “If you can’t reuse it, refuse it”.

The game of tag is an innovative approach to the campaign that encourages people to give up single-use plastics by opting for reusable and sustainable alternatives.

To take part in the challenge, choose a type of single-use plastic that you are ready to give up. Share a selfie or video on social media showing yourself with the reusable or sustainable alternative that you are ready to embrace.

You then “tag” three friends, businesses or high-profile people to challenge them to do the same within 24 hours.

Remember to include the #BeatPlasticPollution hashtag and mention @UNEnvironment.

A growing number of celebrities and environmentalists are taking part in the challenge, including former California Governor and Hollywood superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger, who pledged to terminate plastic spoons on Twitter.

“We all have to work very hard to make this a healthy environment, a great environment, and to save our oceans and save the planet,” said the staunch environmentalist, who then proceeded to tag actor Leonardo DiCaprio, non-profit organisation R20 – Regions of Climate Action and the USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy.
