Statewide raids on illegal gambling net 82

The illegal cockfighting den raided by police in Miri.

KUCHING: The ongoing crackdown on illegal gambling by police saw 82 suspects picked up across the state over the past week.

Sarawak CID chief SAC Denis Leong said the suspects, aged between 17 and 56, were detained during a total of 60 raids carried out from June 4 to June 10.

“The suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in illegal lottery, online gambling, gambling in public places and cockfighting.

“Thirty-five of the raids involved illegal lottery, 22 for online gambling, two for playing ‘Holo’ in public, and one raid against illegal cockfighting,” he said in a statement yesterday.

The raids were carried out in 21 districts, namely Kuching, Kota Samarahan, Miri, Sibu, Padawan, Bau, Mukah, Bintulu, Limbang, Saratok, Maradong, Marudi, Sarikei, Serian, Kapit, Kanowit, Julau, Betong, Simunjan, Lawas and Dalat.

Police seized 64 mobile phones, Holo paraphernalia, betting slips, various stationery items and cash amounting to RM9,265, added Leong.

Those arrested are being investigated under the Common Gaming House Act 1953.
