KLANG: Amirudin Shari, the state assemblyman for Sungai Tua, is the new menteri besar of Selangor.

He succeeds Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali who has been appointed the Minister for Economic Affairs in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Amirudin, 38, took his oath of office as the 16th menteri besar of the state before the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, at Istana Alam Shah here yesterday.

The Sultan also presented him with the letter of appointment.

Also present at the ceremony were the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, and the Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

The swearing-in, held at the Balairung Seri (Throne Room) of the palace, was witnessed by Shah Alam High Court Judge Datuk Mohd Zabidin Mohd Diah.

Holding the Lembing Sembuana lance with one hand, Amirudin of PKR read out the 10 pledges, including on upholding the principles of the Rukunegara and preserving the sovereignty of the Institution of the Malay Rulers.

He also pledged to safeguard the special position of the Malays and the legitimate interests of the other communities as enshrined in the Federal Constitution and the Selangor State Constitution, and to ensure that the position he held remained untarnished by any unlawful conduct.

Amirudin, who was born in Pontian, Johor, won the Batu Caves state seat in the 12th general election in 2008 and retained it in 2014 and 2018. The seat has been renamed Sungai Tua.

At 38, Amirudin, who has been appointed as a member of the Selangor Royal Council, is the youngest to be appointed the menteri besar of Selangor after Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo of the Barisan Nasional who became the menteri besar in 2000 at the age of 35.

Also at the same ceremony, Batu Tiga state assemblyman Rodziah Ismail of PKR was sworn in as a state executive councillor before the Sultan.

Rodziah, 53, was a state executive councillor in charge of welfare and women’s affairs during the administration of former menteri besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Earlier, at a separate ceremony, Mohamed Azmin presented his letter of resignation as the menteri besar to the Sultan at the Bilik Menghadap (Audience Room) of the palace. He had clocked out for the last time on Monday as the menteri besar. — Bernama
