MIRI: Dayang Enterprise Sdn Bhd (DESB) will launch its annual Quality, Health, Safety, Security and Environmental (QHSSE) campaign at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club at 8am on July 18.

The campaign that goes with the theme ‘Enhance Quality & HSSE as our Culture’ aims at drawing attention to the issues and promoting the best ways of tackling  hazards and risks faced by workers.

DESB executive deputy chairman James Ling Suk Kiong told a press conference here yesterday that this year’s campaign, which started on June 30, would be carried out for a month, with various activities to help the community.

“QHSSE is our effort to continue to raise awareness and take action to limit workers’ exposure to various hazards and risks at workplace.

“The campaign is leading the way in reaching workplaces within the company and helps the organisation adopt effective approaches to Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) management with the necessary tools.”

He added that one of the many events that had been successfully organised was beach-cleaning on June 30 that drew more than 60 staff and their families, during which more than 1,000 kg of rubbish were collected. It was aimed at creating the values of social responsibility and green culture within the organisation.

The upcoming events are as follows: Blood donation at DESB Miri headquarters on July 4; at its Labuan office on Aug 4 and a visit by staff of DESB Kota Kinabalu and Bintulu to the Blood Bank on Aug 8.

Others events include a charity golf tournament to be held at Miri Golf Club (KGM) on July 28 where attractive prizes await winners. The champion will walk away with a 49inch flat screen television. It also offers 10 lucky draw prizes.

All proceeds from registration of RM200 per person will be donated to the less fortunate people such as the victim of a gas cylinder explosion in Senadin and charitable organisations like Persatuan IbuBapa Kanak-Kanak Istimewa Miri (Pibakis).

In an attempt to promote healthy lifestyle among staff, Ling also revealed that a weight loss programme – The Biggest Loser – from July 1 till December 31 to encourage staff to exercise and eat a healthy diet.

The programme is open to all DESB staff with body mass index (BMI) above 25.0. A staff who loses the highest percentage of weight relative to their initial weight will win the contest.

A plan to visit SK Lambir and to adopt the institution is also part of the QHSSE programmes.

“We are currently planning a halfday programme with Primary 4 to 6 pupils of the school to share topics such as hazards and risks at school, HSSE in the usage of electronic gadgets, as well as recycling and reuse of plastic,” said Ling.

QHSSE, he said, has become a tradition at DESB, to overcome the challenges such as common misconception, raising awareness of hazards and risks and dissemination of good practices and resources for effective management of QHSSE at workplace.

“Our goal is to build a healthier and safer workforce and integrate workplace health and wellness. Healthy workforce has now become an important element as it establishes a new national culture of health in the workplace, better access to healthcare services for workers, improvement in workers’ accident rate and a stronger national response to environmental risks,” he said.
