KUCHING: Seven swimmers from the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) Elite Swimming Programme competed in the Singapore National Open Championships at the OCBC Aquatics Centre, Singapore from June 20-23.

The team, which was led by manager Sabrina Yusuf and coach Raymond Chang, comprised Cindy Sui, Hii Puong Hou, Hii Puong Wei, Job Tan, Kilian Ung, Leong Wan Mei and Zachary Tan.

The men’s 4x200m freestyle relay quartet of Zachary, Puong Wei, Job and Puong Hou took the bronze after finishing behind champions South Korea and the Singapore Sports School.

Participating in international events such as the Singapore Open Swimming Championships is part of the Elite Programme’s objective to provide exposure and experience to top state swimmers.

On the local front, MSNS and Sarawak Sports Corporation are collaborating to organise the Hornbill Cup, Sarawak’s first short course Inter-Club Meet.

It is aimed at encouraging junior swimmers to push for a higher level of attainment as well as encouraging former swimmers to continue in the sport.

Participants will represent their respective clubs and associations.

A limited edition of swim caps signed by national and Sarawak swimming ace Welson Sim will be awarded to participants in each age group winning the most gold medals.

The Hornbill Cup will be held at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre in Petra Jaya from July 20-22.
