SIBU: A 36-year-old man was yesterday sentenced to a year’s jail after he pleaded guilty to three criminal breach of trust (CBT) charges at the Sessions Court here.

Zunaidi Deraup was charged under Section 408 of the Penal Code which provides for a minimum one year’s jail but not over 14 years upon conviction.

The court heard that Zunaidi had collected payments of RM168.35 on Nov 17, 2017 from a company in Lanang Road, RM112.45 on Nov 29, 2017 from another company in Upper Lanang Road and RM378.95 on Feb 13, 2018 from a company in Long Bridge Road.

The three companies were customers of the firm he worked in.

His company’s manager later discovered that Zunaidi did not surrender the monies collected to his employer.

Based on police investigation, the three companies confirmed having paid the monies to the accused.

They also confirmed that the accused had issued his company’s receipts upon receiving the monies.

In his mitigation, Zunaidi asked for a lenient sentence, saying he was married with four children, and that he was the sole breadwinner in the family.

His children aged 12, 11, six and five are still in school, and he needed to support his aged parents.

Judge Caroline Bee Majanil then sentenced the accused to one year’s jail for each charge and ordered the sentences to run concurrently.

Meanwhile, at a Magistrate’s Court yesterday, an Indonesian man was sentenced to one year in jail after he pleaded guilty to drug possession.

Yusuf, 35, was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act.

The section provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or both.

Yusuf was found to have committed the offence on June 2 at 1.20pm inside a room of an unnumbered house in New Maling Road, Sg Bidut.

He had in his possession 2.80 gram of methamphetamine.
