MIRI: A thunderstorm pounded the city Tuesday night resulting in flash flood, uprooted trees and fallen branches.

Many road users were forced to find alternative routes yesterday morning as they found their usual way to work cut off by flood water reaching several feet – passable only to four-wheel-drive and larger vehicles.

Canopies set up near the parking lot in front of SK Jalan Bintang were blown away by the strong wind.

Parents from Kuala Baram, Desa Senadin and Batu Satu Lutong were also forced to find alternative routes to send their children to SMK Lutong, Chung Hua Lutong and SK Lutong due to submerged roads.

“I had to turn back and use the Desa Senadin Lutong main road to send my kids to SK Lutong,” Julaina Mohamad told The Borneo Post.

According to her, the water level near Kampung Senadin Jaya and Petronas Lutong Terminal was about two-and-a-half feet.

An uprooted tree blocks the road leading to Kampung Bungai.

Many trees along the Lutong-Miri road were either uprooted by the storm or had multiple branches broken.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department yesterday issued a warning of strong wind and thunderstorm for Selangau, Daro, Dalat, Matu, Bintulu, Miri, Subis, Beluru, Marudi and Limbang.
