Two Thai nationals get jail for keeping snares, protected wildlife

KUALA TERENGGANU: Two Thai nationals were sentenced to two years’ jail by the Sessions Court here yesterday after they admitted to keeping wire snares and a protected wildlife last month.

Canthi Cantupa, 44, and his son Pipop Cantupa, 18, were charged with keeping 13 wire snares and a spiny terrapin at the Jengai Forest Reserve in Dungun on June 21.

The charges, under Section 29(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716), punishable under Section 29(2)(a) of the same act as well as Section 68(1)(a) of the act, provide for a maximum fine of RM100,000 or a maximum jail term of three years, or both, if convicted.

The duo were sentenced to two years’ jail for keeping the snares and two years’ jail for keeping the spiny terrapin.

Judge Azman Mustapha ordered the two sentences to run concurrently. — Bernama
