Local angler lands 14.4kg grouper to win grand prize

MIRI: Miri angler Wong Ling Seng earned the grand prize of RM2,200 in the 3rd Rapala and Storm Jigging Competition on Sunday by landing a grouper weighing 14.44kg.

In second place was Sudirman Isa who took home RM1,500 with his catch of a GT weighing 7.08kg while Victor Ho Teck Guan from Miri landed a 6.58kg Cobia winning RM1,000 as the third prize.

Ho Thiam Hua who landed a 5.70kg grouper won the fourth prize of RM600 and Than Chee Phin (4.82kg GT) received RM400. Consolation prize winners Chan Kian Kwang (sixth), Su Lee Ming (seventh) and Kho Lian Ann (eighth) each received RM100 for their respective catches of a  4.72kg grouper, 3.70kg Cobia and 3.62kg grouper.

All winners also received Rapala and Storm fishing tackles sponsored by Rapala VMC Asia Pacific Sdn Bhd.

The competition which took place at Kampung Kuala Sibuti in Bekenu here was organised by Miri Anglers’ Club (MAC) in conjunction with Visit Miri Year 2018 attracted over 70 anglers from all over Sarawak and neighboring countries.

The friendly competition was a platform for jigging fans to exchange ideas while promoting Miri as a haven for deep-sea fishing and local tourism at Kampung Kuala Sibuti where anglers were encouraged to put up at the homestay facilities and support local economy.

During the competition, anglers were only allowed to use ‘Storm’ jigger, not permitted to fish near oil rigs and platforms or catch protected fish species such as shark in line with marine conservation and promotion of sports tourism. Anglers were also encouraged to catch and release the fish back to the sea.
