Bookie fined RM2,000 and a month jail

MIRI: A bookie was fined RM2,000 or a month jail by a magistrate’s court here yesterday for his involvement in illegal football betting activities.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa passed the sentence after the accused, Fam Fook Siong, pleaded guilty to the charge spelt out under Section 6 (1) of the Betting Act, 1953.

The accused could be fined not more than RM5,000 or a jail term not exceeding six months or both, upon conviction.

According to the fact of case, Fam was found to have two carbon booklets and a mobile phone with football betting apps.

He committed the offence at a shop in Jalan South Yu Seng here at 9.15 pm on July 6.

ASP Mary Ong prosecuted while the accused was not represented.
