Man remanded for alleged theft of boat with outboard engine

MIRI: A magistrate’s court here yesterday ordered a man to be remanded four days to assist further police investigations into the stealing of a boat with an outboard engine belonging to a senior citizen.

The suspect, 30, from Kampung Subak, Bekenu was ordered to undergo the remand in Miri Central Police Station lock-up in accordance with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

According to the assistant investigating officer, Sergeant Johnny Mathew Jang, when submitting a remand application yesterday, on July 15, a farmer lodged a police report at the Miri Central Police Station.

The complainant, 62, said around 10.30pm on July 14 at Pujut Corner squatter area, he found his boat with the outboard engine missing.

The complainant then made a check around the area and managed to find his boat but minus the outboard engine.

Acting on information received, a police team headed by ASP Unang Giang at around 4pm on July 16 managed to arrest a man for alleged involvement in the case near the Pujut Corner river.

Around 4.30pm the same day, the suspect took the police team to a shop in Pujut 1 where they found an outboard engine placed in a box.

The outboard engine was then seized to be used as a case exhibit and the suspect was arrested and taken to the Miri Central Police Station for further action.

In his application, Johnny said a four-day remand on the suspect was needed to enable the police to complete the investigation papers opened under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

He also said the police needed to find out if the suspect was involved in other theft cases.

Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa allowed the remand for four days.

The remand period will expire on July 21.
