SIBU: A 36-year-old man was sentenced to three days’ jail and fined RM75,000 by the Sessions Court in Mukah after he pleaded guilty to bribery.

Ting King Soon was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 and punishable under Section 24 of the same Act (Act 694).

The Section carries an imprisonment for a term not exceeding 20 years and a fine not less than five times the sum or value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Ting committed the offence on July 31, 2017 at 3.46pm at Sungai Bedengan Road in Mukah by offering a Land and Survey Department officer RM15,000 as an inducement to not take action against him for illegally extracting sand.

Meanwhile, a 41-year-old man pleaded not guilty to a charge of bribery in the Sessions Court here yesterday.

Ling Lung King allegedly committed the offence on Nov 18, 2015 at 6.20pm at Lane 8 of Ding Lik Kong Road.

He is accused of giving a sum of RM950 to an Immigration Department officer as an inducement to not take action against him for hiring five Indonesian workers who did not possess valid passports or permits.

The court granted him bail of RM6,000 with one local surety and set Aug 8 for pre-trial case management.
