SEREMBAN: The People’s Information Centre (PMR), an initiative of the Information Department, must play a role as the government’s official mouthpiece to explain the vision, mission and policies of the government so that they can be understood and digested by the whole community.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Eddin Syazlee Shith said the centre which frequently became the people’s reference must explain what had been and were being planned by the Pakatan Harapan government including matters pertaining to the manifesto of the 14th General Election (GE14).

“The clearest manifesto was the eradication of the GST (Goods and Services Tax)… this is clear and I believe that is what the people were mostly waiting for and this is what the government had implemented.

“Despite being in a situation where the country has to bear a considerable debt burden, the government proved that whatever had been promised in the manifesto had to a certain extent been delivered,”he told reporters after launching the centre (PMR) and handing over the Jalur Gemilang at the Seremban district level here yesterday.

Also present were the Negeri Sembilan State Secretary Dr Razali Ab Malik, and the Director of the Negeri Sembilan Information Department Mejar (K) Sabarudin Yeop Hamza.

The PMR has a total of 143 centres nationwide with three of them located at the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Pahang, Perak and Johor while the rest were located in the districts.

Commenting further, Eddin Syazlee, who is also the Member of Parliament for Kuala Pilah, said that at the ministry led by the Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo, various efforts were being carried out to give comfort to the people particularly in the aspect of digital technology.

In order to narrow down the digital gap between the urban and rural areas, he said the PMR was one of the approaches that could be of help.

“In addition, the ministry is also studying matters such as the 1Malaysia Internet Centre programme.

I believe that whatever is being done by the PH government, what will be given priority is the welfare and comfort of the people,”he said.

Earlier in his speech, Eddin Syazlee said the function of the setting up of the PMR was in line with the National Information Council which functioned as the government mouthpiece.

Meanwhile in another development, he urged everyone in the country to join together with the government in raising the Jalur Gemilang to demonstrate their sense of patriotism in conjunction with the National Day celebration to be held in August.

As a show of their patriotism, they must be committed in raising the Jalur Gemilang without being forced to do so by anyone.

Padang Kota Lama, Penang has been chosen as the site for the launching of the Merdeka Month with the theme ‘Sayangi Malaysiaku’ (Love My Malaysia) and ‘Kibar Jalur Gemilang 2018’ (Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2018) which is expected to be launched by Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, on Aug 4. —Bernama
