KUCHING: Two of Sarawak’s best taekwondo exponents are representing Malaysia in the week-long Jeju Korea Open International Taekwondo Championship which will end on July 24.

Tan Yen Ming (Kyorugi Male Heavyweight) and Nurul Hidayah Abdul Karim (Poomsae Female Individual) are among Sarawak’s gold medal prospects for the upcoming Sukma to be held in Perak.

Yen Ming is also in contention to make the national team for the 18th Asian Games which will take place in Jakarta, Indonesia next month.

State technical chairman for Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak (WTF) Tan Check Joon observed that “everything must go right” on the big stage like the Jeju Korea Open which is a World Taekwondo (WT) ranking G2 event.

“It’s very far different from the Hanmadang Taekwondo or Festival Taekwondo’s activities.

“I don’t want to put high expectations on our athletes, just to provide our Sarawakian potentials the opportunity and to prepare them to become champion materials in future international championships,” he said.

Meanwhile, Persatuan Taekwondo Negeri Sarawak (WTF) president Azizul Annuar Adenan Satem said he was proud that the duo were selected for such a high level competition.
