KUCHING: Five individuals, including two senior National Civics Bureau (BTN)officers, had their remand extended by another six days by the Magistrate’s Court here, following the expiry of their previous five-day remand yesterday.

The remand extension until Aug 5 is to allow the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to complete its investigation into the alleged falsification of claims amounting to RM600,000.

The suspects – three men and two women aged between 34 and 55 – are alleged to have collaborated with 43 companies from all over Sarawak by falsifying claims in 2016 for works worth between RM2,000 and RM6,000 each.

The payments were made to the accounts of several companies, with the five profiting from the companies that they chose.

It is alleged that about 70 per cent of the services and supplies done by the companies were either non-existent or not carried out. The five – three of whom were previously attached with BTN Sarawak but have since either retired or been transferred out – are said to have had control of the BTN Sarawak account and allegedly used the money for personal purposes. The case has been classified under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009.
