KUCHING: Borneo International School upper primary and secondary students conducted a beach-sweep at Damai Central Beach recently.

A press release said the students went about the beach-sweep with great gusto and determination along with their teachers.

It was part of the school’s environmental and community service programme.

In teams of four or five students, they collected rubbish left behind by inconsiderate beachgoers, as well as flotsam and jetsam cast overboard from passing boats and washed up on the tide.

Borneo International School students are seen with their rubbish haul after the beach-sweep.

The students packed 50 large garbage bags full of all types of waste, including plastic bottles, polystyrene and paper food cartons, aluminium drink cans, oil cans, and even a discarded table and a collapsed trolley.

“Our students have had a great sense of satisfaction in meeting the challenge and contributing to a cleaner environment for the greater benefit of the community at large,” said principal Florence Chew.

The lower primary pupils, who did not join the beach-sweep, also had their part to play at the school.

“The lower primary students did more than their share in sweeping the school forecourt and front campus and then designing and writing thank you cards, which they presented to the school’s ancillary staff in appreciation of their often unsung work in keeping the school clean,” added Chew.
